Meteor Crater

This is the location of a cosmic collision that took place over 50,000 years ago. A large iron/nickel meteorite roared through the earth’s atmosphere and struck the earth in what is now known as northern Arizona. Meteor Crater was formed.. almost 4,000 feet across and over 500 feet deep.

You will learn all about this monster explosion in the Visitor Center. There is a movie presentation, interactive learning center and tours along the rim.

Every year in September, NASA brings scientists to Meteor Crater to test equipment to be used in space exploration. A gift shop provides plenty of souvenir opportunities. Meteor Crater is east of Flagstaff on Interstate 40.
