At an altitude of 7,000 feet, the weather in Flagstaff goes through many changes over the course of a year. All four seasons are prominent. The average precipitation for the area is almost 23 inches a year. This comes in the form of heavy snows in the winter and monsoon rain storms in the summer. The National Weather Service for the Flagstaff area tells us that the average maximum temperature for the year is 61 degrees and the average minimum temperature is 30 degrees. Flagstaff is one of the 10 sunniest locations of the National Weather Service offices. Springtime brings the wind with many days where the wind is up over 40 mph. During the summer monsoon season, heavy thunder and lightning storms are prevalent along with heavy rains. By mid-October, the night time temperatures have cooled enough to bring about the changing of the leaves. The slopes of the San Francisco Peaks turn gold with the changing of the Aspen Trees. In Flagstaff, the variety of trees and their colors make for great pictures. When the snow comes, it can be light or it can be heavy, sometimes dumping up to more than 2 feet in a storm. So year round, the weather keeps changing in Flagstaff.
